[mslee's thoughts] Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo Screen caps Episode 1

My thoughts on this drama and how it is gaining more interest in my perspective in connection with other dramas currently airing.

This is currently one of the dramas [MBC] I am watching following the finale of Scarlet Heart Ryeo from SBS. I am somehow having withdrawal syndrome, the after effects of Moonlovers which I find really hard, spoiling new dramas for me. But somehow Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo has a light storyline and entertaining to watch which I am positive that as the story develops, it will be heartwarming which is always the case with this kind of plot.

I find the drama amusing and cute at the same time. Actually I have been anticipating this with both Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung Kyung as the main leads, finally. This reminds me of To The Beautiful You which sadly has low ratings then and ironically, this one started low as well considering the rival drama Legend of the Blue Sea airing at the same time. I have watched that one too and personally, in my honest opinion, it has not come up to my expectation if Man From The Stars is going to be my standard considering it has the same writer. Yes, the main lead girl Jun Ji Hyun is an awesome actress and very versatile but...maybe more episodes and I am willing to change my mind.

For now, Weightlifting Fairy... has a storyline about hope and faith and I think redemption maybe in the list, too. Or perhaps that feeling of triumphant after so many hurdles in life will be a lesson which will possibly make viewers feel heartwarming which I think is a very positive feeling one must appreciate and see.

For now the story started showing Bok Joo choosing to be a weightlifter and Jung Joon Hyung as a swimmer. He has a problem right now which makes it hard for him to be the star athlete. It feels as if he has trauma which randomly occur particularly when he was training. He feels dizzy and it tampers with his hearing which makes it harder for him to hear the exact time when to start jumping on the water. Both Bok Joo and Joon Hyung seem to have a nice family although he lives a better life while her father runs a chicken restaurant. They had a bad encounter which led to another when she accused him of being a thief in the campus. However the real thief was discovered and of course, she has to apologize to him.

Then there is the conflict between weightlifters and the gymnast team. they are always in each other's nerves and never seems to be friendly to each other. Joon Hyung's ex girlfriend is back and she is a gymnast. She is currently Bok Joo's roommate.

For starters I like it. Not heavy but enough to be entertained. I like the school atmosphere, the coaches relationship to the students. The dedication each student gives to perfect their routine. This is what makes this drama good and inspiring. And I am anticipating more. I don't care if ratings do not go well, but I am really hoping that the storyline will not disappoint. the romance is a treat but more than that, I hope the drama will fill the heart with passion and perseverance which will inspire the audience in real life.

Below are screen caps of episode 1.

Plot

Kim Bok-Joo (Lee Sung-Kyung) is a promising collegiate female weightlifter. Her father runs a small chicken restaurant and her uncle wants to become an actor. She has a bright personality and strong sense of justice. Kim Bok-Joo and her friends on the female weightlifting team are not popular with the guys and they don't have boyfriends. The weightlifting team and the rhythmic gymnastic team also don't get along at all.
Meanwhile, Jung Joon-Hyung (Nam Joo-Hyuk) is a collegiate swimmer plagued with numerous false start disqualifications. He is 21-years-old and has a free spirit. His uncle and aunt raised him along with his cousin Jung Jae-Yi (Lee Jae-Yoon).
One day on campus, Kim Bok-Joo bumps into Jung Joon-Hyung while he is riding his bicycle. Her face looks familiar to Jung Joon-Hyung. After he leaves, Kim Bok-Joo picks up a handkerchief left behind by Jung Joon-Hyung. The handkerchief is very important to him and he begins looking for it.
Later, Kim Bok-Joo cleans and irons the handkerchief. She goes to the school's swimming pool and gives back his handkerchief, but he explodes with anger when he sees that she cleaned it. Kim Bok-Joo then falls into the swimming pool and Jung Joon-Hyung jumps into the pool to save her. At that moment, Kim Bok-Joo and Jung Joon-Hyung realize where they have seen each other before. When they were both children, Kim Bok-Joo saved Jung Joon-Hyung's life by catching him before he fell to the ground.
Kim Bok-Joo and Jung Joon-Hyung's relationship now begins.
